I am passionate about the prayer for young clergy in the United Methodist Church. I believe that God’s work through the United Methodist Church is not done and that leaders of all ages will continue to be a part of this work.

The scripture for today helps to make an important distinction in the need for young clergy. Jesus teaches, heals, and proclaims good news in the communities throughout the countryside. He cares for the crowds who are without guidance, who are – as the TNIV translation states – “harassed and helpless.” Jesus’ call for workers in the field is a result of the needs of the people who do not yet know God. In this passage, Jesus does not call people to care for those who are already connected with God in a faith community.

Jesus calls workers, leaders and young clergy to reach those who

  • have not been reached…
  • are in need of care…
  • seek healing…

I pray that God will continue to call young clergy to invite non and nominally religious people to the journey toward becoming a deeply committed Christian.
